If you are struggling with a medical condition, it is a part of your life.

Wellness is about embracing the natural unfolding of our lives… the good, the bad, and the downright ugly… and your medical condition IS a part of your life.   That doesn’t mean that you should become passive and give up – instead consider it an invitation to look at your life more deeply.

Rumi says,”Don’t turn away. Keep your gaze on the bandaged place. That’s where the light enters.” Instead of pretending it does not exist, embrace “what is.”

Jessica Flanagan teaches that” illness is grace in disguise…. and love is the medicine.”

Their teachings are not about fighting against whatever medical condition or physical challenge you are facing but instead embrace it.

You may ask:  What does this illness have to teach me?  What is my relationship to it? What will my look like when I embrace what is? What does my best life look like?

Each of us must answer these questions for ourselves. Our wellness team of physicians, therapists, healers, etc. can only offer guidance but it is up to each of us to define what wellness looks like…. in our own terms.

God give me the courage to change what I can,
The strength to accept what I cannot,
And the wisdom to know the difference.

Wellness is about learning the difference between what you can change and what you cannot and focusing your energies wisely. You are so much more than the story of your medical condition.  Whatever you are experiencing NOW is your life.

Wellness offers healing physically, socially, psychologically and spiritually even if a cure is not possible. It brings a sense of harmony and balance to life.  It is a lifestyle that offers a greater self understanding and awareness.  You are not your body.  You are not your thoughts.  Your are not your emotions.  You are more than that.

Wellness is the mind-body-spirit-emotions integration that promotes self-care and self-awareness AND connects you to the larger world. It is a state of being joyfully and enthusiastically engaged with your life, even if it doesn’t turn our exactly as you planned.

My wish for you is transcendence beyond dis-ability to a life of wholeness, balance and harmony.

May you be well.
